Originally developed for airborne and spaceborne applications, hyperspectral imaging has now been introduced to forensic applications. ITD patented Focal Plane Scanner (U.S. Patent No. 6166373) enables hyperspectral image acquisition in a variety of modes. This versatility allows the end user to examine virtually any kind of forensic evidence.

The RDACS/H3 hyperspectral imaging system measures the intensity of reflected energy from a given target from 430 - 900 nanometers. The system can capture imagery at a variety of spatial and spectral resolutions chosen by the end user. Imagery is acquired using a push-broom mechanism that scans the target one line at a time while recording a complete spectral profile from each picture element. These data element are then constructed into a data “cube”, or hyperspectral image.
